Safety Patrol Members Take Care of Business

Safety Patrol

Whether it’s opening car doors with a smile, or welcoming prospective parents to Carrollwood Day School, our fifth grade Safety Patrol is always eager to lend a hand!

Safety Patrol members are easily identifiable, not only because of their bright yellow belts, but their warm, welcoming smiles as well.  Their primary responsibility is assisting teachers with carline in both the morning and afternoon. They also serve as tour guides for special events, including the all-school open house in October, the rising first grade coffee in November, and Grandparents Day in February.

Fifth grade teacher Barbie Monty is the Safety Patrol moderator. “We have found our Safety Patrol program to be extremely helpful during arrival and dismissal each day. Our students are so enthusiastic about the program and eagerly arrive for their posts at 7:40 each morning and excitedly greet students and parents while opening car doors. It's such a great way for students to begin their mornings! In the afternoons, our Safety Patrol members assist with dismissal by ensuring that students arrive at the correct cone in a timely manner and assist them in getting into the cars safely. They are always so eager to open the doors and help students climb into their cars!”

This year, there are 35 members of the Safety Patrol.  Only fifth graders may serve on the Safety Patrol, and, in order to become a member, students had to complete an application in which they identified qualities or skills they possess that would make them a good candidate for our Safety Patrol Program. They also had to obtain at least one teacher recommendation.

This year’s officers had to submit a separate application and obtain an additional teacher recommendation.  They are:

Co-Captains – Addie P. and Grace T.
Lieutenant  - Kaiya B.
Sergeant – Lexi L.

“I am really so proud of how active our patrol members have been this year,” says Mrs. Monty. “They are taking their responsibilities seriously. I genuinely appreciate each of them being so committed to assisting with a safe arrival and dismissal every single day. They truly are role models for all of our students!”
