Welcome to Opening Day!

Ryan Kelly

Welcome back to Carrollwood Day School, and for those new to our school, welcome to the CDS family! The CDS team was busy all summer with our fantastic summer and enrichment camps, together with getting everything ready for the 2019-2020 school year.  I want to also extend a warm welcome to the talented faculty and staff joining CDS in 2019.

Along with the excitement of preparing for the new school year, we have remained busy over the summer launching the most ambitious capital campaign in our school's history. Dream. Believe. Achieve. The Campaign for Carrollwood Day School will make new dreams possible for generations of CDS students. This next bold step for CDS will set the bar for forward-thinking, innovative independent school learning communities.

During the awareness events for the Campaign, I am often asked to explain why we are doing this and what is the vision for CDS and its future. I'd like to explain to the whole community why and where CDS is going.

Since I began my tenure at CDS in 2008, I have had one goal that drives me each day: Make CDS the best it can be. What I have discovered throughout my life is the true power of this goal is in the journey, it is a goal you work to achieve each day - and over time, you move significantly from where you have been and find yourself in a much better place. This is how I feel about CDS. When I first walked on the campus in the spring of 2008, I felt the amazing things being done along with the incredible potential this school had and still has. Since 2008, CDS has moved materially from the school that "thought it could," to the school that "knows it can." This has been achieved in a very systematic way, always grounded in our school's core commitment to Education with Character.

Character is the fabric that holds together all we do and provides the firm foundation upon which we have built everything else. We need to look no further than our school mission to understand where CDS is going:

The mission of Carrollwood Day School is to create entrepreneurial thinkers for a global society. We provide strong character-based education emphasizing problem-solving skills and philanthropic understanding. Our students are prepared to be world leaders using the International Baccalaureate Programmes, cutting-edge technology, creative arts, and competitive athletics. Most importantly, CDS fosters the development of the entire student not only in academics, but also ethically, emotionally, and through social experience. Our goal is to help students discover and develop their own talents and interests and use these to better the world and themselves.

This journey begins at our early childhood campus, where we follow the latest research on the importance of play guiding learning. These first learning experiences create a springboard for an approach to learning based on curiosity and exploration that continues through our rigorous upper school program. Throughout all divisions I see students who are distinguishing themselves in the classroom and beyond. As we prepare our students to be primed for success in today's competitive world, I see compassionate leaders and accomplished athletes and artists, entrepreneurial risk-takers and problem solvers, embodying the qualities of well-balanced global learners.

So, to answer the questions of why we need this Campaign, we need to enhance this already fantastic experience and continue to equip our students with the skills and experiences to meet life's future challenges in an ever-changing world.

As we stand on the threshold of another opening day, our campuses are energized and eager for the many opportunities this new school year will bring. I look forward to speaking with you throughout the year and hearing about your experiences at CDS. I am constantly amazed by our students and am eager to partner with you as your children continue their educational journey at CDS, preparing to take hold of their future.

Warmest wishes for a fantastic year,
Ryan Kelly, Ed.D.
