SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION

Art is Innovation

In connection with their Unit of Inquiry, ENERGY, our 5th-grade students learned about the Swiss sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti. Students created their own Giacometti sculptures and added a new 21st-century twist to their creations by making them interactive with Makey-Makey Lab kits and computers. We truly have amazing innovators!

MUSIC IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

Mini MIM

The Mini Musical Instrument Museum is one of the popular interactive features of Elementary's new DREAM Lab. The Mini MIM is a place where children can explore, research, and report on instruments from around the world. The current Mini MIM display features authentic instruments from Ghana. The children have been given the opportunity to study the materials, pitch, and sound each instrument makes. They will now begin researching the ways music, instruments, and dance play a part in the Ghanaian culture.

With the use of Apple TV, students will be able to Skype with children from around the world to form relationships, inquire about cultural differences, and become more globally minded. Once they complete their research, they can share their findings with their peers, using a presentation method of their choice.

In addition to instruments, the Mini MIM also contains computers for research and music composition. Children can use Chrome Music Lab to create their own rhythm, sound waves, and beats.

Share your family's culture through music!

The Mini MIM is inviting families with culturally diverse instruments to lend them to our interactive Mini MIM for student exploration, research, and discovery. Ideally, we would be able to have instruments on display and available for research projects for a semester.  Please complete this form if you would be interested in lending instruments for our students to study.
