Middle School and Upper School students are welcome to remain on campus after dismissal. The administration has established after school policies to enable students to remain on campus after school and attend home athletic games in the Hayes Family Gymnasium and Wagner Athletic Complex. No student will be allowed to "hang out" on campus unsupervised after dismissal. Students who are not participating in an athletic team practice session are not allowed to be in the gymnasium or fitness center after school. These facilities are fully booked by the athletic teams.
MS/US Study Hall
By 3:45 p.m. all students must be in an extracurricular activity (working with a teacher, attending an after school program, athletic team practice, drama/music rehearsal, etc.) or report to the supervised MS/US study hall that will be held in the US Humanities Quad (Rooms H129 and H130). Teachers staffing study hall this year are Mr. Jannereth, Ms. Flansburg, and Ms. O'Neill.
Questions? Please contact Mr. Jannereth, MS/US After School Study Hall Coordinator.
At CDS, we encourage our students to give back to the community. As an IB school, we embrace the mission statement of the IBO, which strives to develop “caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.”

First US Parents' Coffee Morning
Tuesday, September 11
8:30 a.m.
Elementary Multi-Purpose Room
Sara Rubinstein, Head of the Upper School, will host a series of morning coffees this year for all upper school parents. 8th grade parents are invited to attend these bi-monthly get togethers that feature a discussion on a topic of particular interest to parents. The topic for this first coffee is Raising Empathetic Kids, in preparation for the parent program on September 26 with Dr. Michele Borba.
Parents’ Coffee Mornings are generally on Thursday mornings at 8:30 a.m.
Additional coffees will be held on:
November 1, January 17, March 14, and April 4. Check the school calendar for the topics for each of these programs.
Friday, September 7
Studio Artistry, the official school photographer, will be on campus to take individual student pictures of all middle school students on Friday, September 7.
Students should wear their regular school uniform for school pictures - no spirit shirts, sweatshirts, or PE uniforms. If your child has PE on Friday, please send his/her PE uniform to school; students will have a chance to change before PE.
Wednesday, September 12
Wednesday, September 12, 2018, is the first Conference Day for grades 6 - 8. MS students are expected to participate in this conference with their parents. There is no school on Wednesday for Lower School and Middle School students. CDS does not offer child care for students on days when regular classes are not held.
Most parents signed up for appointments at the MS Parents' Night. Parents who have not yet set appointments should email their child's advisory teacher. If parents are unavailable on September 12, they are welcome to contact their child's teacher to reschedule a different date and time during the teacher's office hours. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, September 12.
Students who are interested in completing a STEM project, formerly known as a science project, have the opportunity to join the CDS STEM Society. The main purpose of the STEM Society is to support and sponsor individual students, or teams, that wish to complete an independent science, technology, engineering, or math investigation for potential entry to the Hillsborough Regional STEM Fair.
The Hillsborough Regional STEM Fair is held at the Tampa Convention Center in February. Investigations must be reviewed and approved by the STEM sponsor before experimentation can begin. Experimentation may need to take place off campus and must be completed by the end of November. The CDS STEM Fair will take place during the first week of December and the top 13 middle school projects will move on to compete at the regional level in February. To join the STEM Society, students must send a Schoology message to the STEM Society sponsor, Carrie Prieto, who will add them to the Schoology Course. Parents may email cprieto@carrollwooddayschool.org with questions.
Week of September 17
During the week of September 17th, students in grades 6 - 8 will take tests called Measures of Academic ProgressTM (MAP). MAP Growth tests are used to determine each student's instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year, in math and reading.
There is no suggested preparation other than a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast. Therefore, homework and assessments may carry on as usual.
