SPOTLIGHT ON INNOVATION

Elementary Tours the World!

In preparation for International Festival, each grade is becoming immersed in the culture, landmarks, monuments and history of countries from around the world. With the help of Google Expeditions, students can jump right in and explore their country up close and personal! Come along with Mrs Kuhn's fourth grade class and Mrs. Grace's third graders as they "travel" to Peru and Madagascar.

NEW PARKING CHANGES

Car line

Beginning Monday, September 10:

  • All student drivers will park on South Beach. CDS facilities staff will be on the field directing traffic.
    • Parking will be on the west end of the South Beach field so as not to impact the softball field.
    • Student drivers will no longer have to wait to be dismissed until the car line is cleared.
    • We negotiated to have 120 cars on South Beach, so we will not be able to add additional student drivers.
    • A HUGE thank you to Vinnie Monty and his staff for taking on the added responsibility of directing parking on South Beach.
  • The west lot will again be available for faculty and visitor parking.

COUNSELORS' CORNER

Setting Family Technology Rules

Tech Safety

Technology is developing and changing everyday, it is hard to keep up with but it is important to be aware and informed.  When used appropriately it is a great tool but at times students struggle with using their devices responsibly.

Here are some tips for ensuring that devices are being used safely and appropriately.

  • Common area charging stations.   Have a curfew for devices; students should not charge their devices overnight in their bedroom.  Often times they stay up way too late gaming or socializing and it impacts them the following day at school.  You may think they are asleep but they easily lose track of time while on their device.
  • Set parental controls.  Students have their devices with them during the day for school but also during their socializing time in and out of school.   You may have parental controls set on your child’s device, but their friends may not.  Be sure you have your parental controls set so no matter who is hanging out, everyone is being safe.
  • Set device boundaries.  Set times that technology should not be used.  Create boundaries that allow for tech free time and a device free zone.  Try having no devices during any family days, family meals or other important family times.
  • Cell phone contract.  Although this works best initiating the contract when the phone is first introduced, if needed adding it at any point is beneficial.  The contract is an agreement that outlines what you and your child will do to ensure device is used responsibly.  It should also include consequences if contract is not followed.  Create this with your child, make them part of the plan.
