Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s largest national fundraiser and your contributions are used right here in Hillsborough County. There are several ways you can help:

  1. Honor a cancer survivor or remember someone who has lost his/her battle with cancer by dedicating a candle to be lit at the Luminaria Ceremony at 9pm on April 6. Order your bag and please join us at Sickles High School for this very special ceremony.
  2. Donate gifts cards or other items to be used in gift baskets for fundraising at the event. Contact Shelly Hollingsworth, Beta Club Sponsor, for more information.

CDS Unplugged

On Friday, parts of our school will be unplugging in support of National Day of Unplugging.  This is an annual movement that we participate in to support the refocus on our meaningful relationships.  Unplugging can come as a shock since as a society we have become so reliant on technology, but the fact that it is hard to accept and participate in is the same reason it is important to take a digital detox together.

We encourage families to continue to be unplugged together until sundown on Saturday.

Why We Love National Day of Unplugging

Powering-down removes unhealthy feelings of jealousy due to social media.
Research shows that 1 in 3 people feel worse after visiting social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, and overall more dissatisfied with their lives. Of course, not every interaction with social media is a negative one but powering-down for a healthy period of time provides ample time to recalibrate oneself and refocus appreciation and gratitude, by living life presently.

Our social media streams are ever populated with everything happening all around us. Within this constant stream of notifications, our fear of missing out continues to grow. Turning off social media and finding contentment in our present space is a healthy alternative; it is important for children and families to engage in meaningful connections away from the screens.

Unplug ideas

  • Put your phone in a box for 24 hours. Challenge yourself to leave your phone unattended for a full 24 hours. See how much you're able to focus on being present, and in the moment of things without constant notifications distracting you.
  • Go outside. Ride a bike.  Go to the park.  Run, walk, and skip! Cook. Dance.  Do yoga.  Read a book. Play a board game.  Work in the yard.  Play in the rain.  Get artistic.                                     We increasingly miss out on the important moments of our lives as we pass the hours with our noses buried in our devices, shielding ourselves from the outside world with the bubble of “silence” that our earphones create.
  • Volunteering is not only good for the community, it’s good for your well-being too. Selfless acts of kindness have been linked to a longer life and reduced stress in humans. Boost your happiness levels today while unplugging!

We hope you all disconnect to reconnect! Take this day to carve out precious time to unplug, relax, reflect, be active and connect with loved ones.
