Early Childhood:  Music is integrated into daily activities

Preschool classes sing songs, do finger plays and basic movement exercises, play musical instruments throughout the day. In addition to daily music activities that enrich classroom units of inquiry, kindergarten classes have music once a week with an experienced music teacher.

Elementary:  Two 30-minute classes each week

The students learn about beat, rhythm and pitch through the singing of songs, movement, and the playing of instruments. Younger students begin with rhythm instruments. In third grade students learn to play the soprano recorder. Students will learn music notations and create their own compositions. Students also develop an awareness of and appreciation for music from a range of times and cultures.

Students have a variety of opportunities to perform throughout the year.  Each grade performs as a group for Fall Festival and Spring Fling.  Beginning in fifth grade, students can audition for solo performances as part of the Spring Fling program.

Every 6th and 7th grade student will participate one trimester of music each year as part of an arts rotation.  Students will experience the fun and challenge of playing individually and in groups as they explore a variety of musical styles, basic music theory, history, and composition.

In 8th grade, the MYP music elective is a full year course designed to allow students to pursue a more in depth instrumental musical study.  Students are offered a variety of optional performance opportunities during the year.

All middle school students may audition for music ensembles that meet at study hall or lunch. These skill based groups are organized at the beginning of each year and meet at least once a week to play for fun and prepare performance music for school events. The guitar ensemble is invited to participate in the Florida Music Educators Guitar Festival during the second semester each year.  New music club opportunities are considered yearly based on student interest.

Upper School: Instrumental Music is an elective

Upper school students can elect to participate in the instrumental music program. They perform at  Performing Arts Showcases several times a year.

Eleventh and twelfth grade students participating in the IB Diploma Programme can elect to take IB DP Music SL or IB DP Music HL.

Music Enrichment Programs

Students in grades 3 and older have the opportunity to extend their musical instruction beyond the school day. Mrs. Holtsclaw, Carrollwood Day School's elementary music teacher offers Chorus for students in 3rd - 5th grades and Orff Ensemble is open to students in grades 4 and 5. CDS middle school and upper school music teachers, Mrs. Amy Callahan and Mr. James Mayo, offer after school Group Instrumental Lessons to all middle school students and upper school music students.

Elementary After School Music Enrichment

Two music ensemble opportunities are being offered to students in grades 3 - 5.

  • Chorus is for students in 3rd - 5th grades, who love singing and dancing.  The groups performs throughout the year at International Day, Music in our Schools celebration, and Spring Fling.  They also will try to perform  at a local assisted living facility.
  • The Orff Ensemble is a new group this year. Orff includes singing, movement, and a variety of instruments (xylophones, metallophones, recorders, etc.).  Because of the instruments, the number of students who will be able to participate will be limited. This group is for students in 4th & 5th grades.  If the response is great, it will be on a first come/first served basis.

The groups will meet in the Elementary Music Room from 3:00 pm - 3:45 pm.

  • Chorus will meet on Tuesdays
  • The Orff Ensemble will meet on Thursdays

Students can be picked up shortly after regular dismissal or they can go to aftercare following their rehearsal.
