Kindergarten students sell fancy footwear for a cause.

One sock, two sock, red sock, blue sock . . . or taco sock, chili sock, argyle sock, diamond sock.  Whatever your style is, kindergarten’s got it for you!

As a We Help Two partner school, Carrollwood Day School kindergartners are participating in the Socks for Clubfoot program for their service project. The campaign will run until November 15, 2019.

Clubfoot is a birth defect in which a baby’s foot or feet are deformed and turned inward because the tendons between his or her heels and legs are too short. Every three minutes a baby is born with clubfoot. Boys are twice as likely as girls to be born with this birth defect.

There is treatment, but 90% of children with clubfoot are born in parts of the world where options are limited.  This is a problem, because treatment should start almost immediately after birth, ideally within one to two weeks. If left untreated, clubfoot causes long-term issues with a child’s physical abilities, particularly walking. Children with clubfoot are routinely shunned by society and live as outcasts; they often are unable to find work and end up doing menial labor at most.

What Can You Do to Help?

The kindergarten students became aware of Socks for Clubfoot after kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Piazza, kept seeing the fundraiser at various IB workshops at which she taught.  As the children were looking for a way to make a difference both globally and locally, Mrs. Piazza presented the idea to all four kindergarten classes and they voted to sell socks to fund clubfoot correction treatment in babies around the world. The global connection is to sell enough socks – 100 pair - to help one baby get his or her clubfoot corrected. The local connection is that, for each pack of socks sold, the CDS kindergartners will donate a pair to a local organization. Finally, there is a personal connection as well, as the students will paint the booties bright colors that the babies will then wear as part of their corrective brace after surgery.

In light of the holiday season, please help us give an important gift to babies around the world. Purchase a three-pack of funky socks for only $12! The kindergartners have passed their initial goal of 100 packs of socks, which will pay for one baby’s clubfoot correction, and are now focused on selling another 100 packs, so they can help two babies.

We would like to ask everyone to buy one or two packs of these fun and colorful socks that will help change lives.
