Renovations greet ECC students as they return to school
Eat your heart out, HGTV! This summer, the CDS facilities crew took on the Early Childhood Campus as its own “fixer-upper” – and the results are breathtaking!
While the ECC has always been a haven for learning, fun, caring, and sharing, the building had started to show its age as the growing student population filled the spaces inside and outside. Taking advantage of a one-week break in July and a two-week break between summer camp and the teachers’ return, the facilities crew broke out their sledgehammers, paint brushes, flooring supplies, and more to create a beautiful new space.
First up, the front entrance. Since the ECC moved to Casey Road in 1984, the lobby had served as a kitchen/lounge/welcome center, which caused quite a bit of congestion in the mornings and at lunch time. In July, the cabinets and floors were torn out and replaced with beautiful new flooring, a front door with a full window, and cozy chairs for a seating area. Our wonderful receptionist Miss Molly even got a new desk!
Next, the Big Room. This room is the centerpiece of the ECC, and a favorite space for most of our students. The centers we love remain intact, but spruced up – a fresh coat of new paint on all walls, brand new floors, and rearranged areas to make for easier learning and cleanup. The biggest – and most exciting! – change to Big Room is the brand new library. Books are now readily available for browsing on child-sized shelves, and new tables provide just the right space for our young readers to dig in to a good story!
Moving on to the playground . . . With the toddler class returning to the main building, the modular was no longer needed, so it was removed, creating an even larger outdoor space for the students to enjoy. Most days, you will see the children putting their engineering skills to work as they create structures using the Imagination Playground big blue blocks that were donated last year.
Finally, in each of the prekindergarten classrooms and the library, you will find a brand new Vizio television screens. These are not being used for TV viewing, but rather as projectors. The screens connect to the teachers’ iPads and computers, using Apple TV devices that they can display for reading, math and IB units of inquiry. Currently, they are being used as part of Technology Tuesday with Mrs. Hug (more about that next week!).
All of these physical improvements enhance the academic growth and enrichment happening at the ECC every day. Check out next week’s Thursday folder for a discussion of how the ECC is enriching the learning experience for all students, toddler through kindergarten!
