Second grade classes explore need to share finite natural resources
Second grade has been focusing on the transdisciplinary theme "How we share the planet." This IB unit of inquiry was an exploration of our rights and responsibilities as we share finite resources with other people, with other living things, of communities and of the relationships within and between them.
Questions teachers used to drive the student inquiries included:
- Why do some people choose to reduce, reuse, and recycle?
- How does conservation affect the environment?
- What are some methods to reduce, reuse, and recycle?
After learning about renewable resources "Wind Energy" and "Solar Energy" the children made windmills using junk mail that they brought in from home. The children also used tin foil, shoe boxes and black paper to make solar ovens. Then they used the solar ovens to cook S'mores.
Also, as an outreach the 2nd grade wrote letters and made a snack to give to children at Metropolitan Ministries.
