This week kicks off Patriot Buddies, a very special Carrollwood Day School tradition that Head of School, Ryan Kelly, introduced in 2012 when he was head of the upper school. Patriot Buddies create a strong bond between two very important grade levels at CDS: Seniors (Class of 2018), the leaders of our school and First Graders (Class of 2029), the future leaders of CDS. This week, seniors were paired up with their first grade buddies. Monthly throughout the year, the Patriot Buddies will participate in cross divisional activities. Plans for this year include sharing favorite books, having lunch together, playing board games, touring the upper school, compiling a time capsule, working on a Caring Project, and of course posing together for beginning of the year and graduation buddy pictures! At the end of the year, the first graders will lead a special Send-Off to wish the seniors well before they commence their IB exams. Each year, a highlight of this program is the touching advice the first graders prepare for the seniors as they head off to college.
As we prepare for the sixth year of Patriot Buddies, Dr. Kelly explains, “Patriot Buddies epitomizes our theme: CDS Where Caring is Common. It is so important for a young child to have positive role models in their life. Patriot Buddies aims to provide our first graders a role model within the school to learn from, grow with, and share in the great experience CDS provides its students. I am so proud of this tradition and it very well could be my favorite.”
Many of the Patriot Buddies develop lasting relationships with promises to return for the younger buddy’s graduation. Every year it is always exciting to have alumni return to campus to visit their Patriot Buddies, the oldest of whom are in middle school this year!
Join us on Friday for a special morning assembly to welcome the Classes of 2018 and 2029 Patriot Buddies!
