Founded in 1981 as an early childhood center, Carrollwood Day School has grown to include elementary, middle school and high school. CDS enjoys a reputation for excellence in academics with an emphasis on character development enriched by a wealth of extra-curricular programs and clubs.
As the only International Baccalaureate World School in the area to offer the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and Diploma Programme, CDS students flourish in a rich continuum of learner-centered education that begins in preschool, continues through high school graduation, and will last a lifetime. Students at all levels are also immersed in CDS's signature STEEM program which combines science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and entrepreneurship education to prepare CDS graduates to be the leaders they have the capacity to be.
CDS is a not-for-profit corporation with 501(c)(3) status, governed by a Board of Trustees.
CDS: Where Caring is Common
"Education with Character" is the foundation of the culture at CDS. From preschool through high school, teachers purposefully integrate character development in the curriculum and life at CDS. Faculty, staff, coaches, and parents partner to create an inclusive school community where students feel safe, supported, and connected. Carrollwood Day School has been named a "National School of Character" and is recognized as "A Caring School" by Making Caring Common, a project of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Early Childhood Campus
The opening of Carrollwood Day School's Early Childhood Campus in 1981 was the very beginning of the CDS of today. It all began in a small storefront near its present location. The school was settled into its own building on Casey Road in 1984. The campus was designed to and continues to meet the needs of young children in all areas of development. In addition to spacious classrooms, children spend a large portion of their academic day in our 2,000 square foot exploratorium, which is comprised of interest centers designed to pique the minds of young children. Our students also benefit from playing outside on our huge, natural design playground that includes many areas for children to explore, imagine, and play. Designed in 2012 in partnership with Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, some of the playground features include rolling hills, an enormous "tree house," sand and water play areas, and musical instruments. We are honored to be staffed by our well educated, highly trained faculty and staff.
Bearss Avenue Campus
Carrollwood Day School's elementary and middle school moved to a new campus in January 2006. Surrounded by mirrored lakes, a retreat center and wetland conservation, this beautiful campus provides the perfect setting for Carrollwood Day School to realize its vision to continue its tradition of excellence for students in elementary through high school.
CDS's main building includes classrooms for middle school through high school, a Center for Innovation, science labs, computer labs, visual arts, performing arts and music studios, and a performing arts theatre that seats 800. In addition to the computer labs that are used for a variety of design technology courses, every student in grades 4 - 12 brings a personally owned iPad or MacBook to school each day.
In January 2012, CDS dedicated a brand new elementary campus. The new elementary campus is built around a central courtyard and features grade-level suites, a large multi-purpose room, a spacious media center and computer lab, art, music, and foreign language classrooms, and a "MakerLab". The MakerLab is the hub of STEEM related activities as students expand on their classroom learning experiences with opportunities to create, design, and explore.
The middle school division shares the main building with the high school and has its own classrooms, science labs, music, drama and art studios, and design tech labs. The high school division of Carrollwood Day School opened in August 2006. Originally housed in a modular facility, in January 2012 the high school moved into state-of-the-art classrooms in the beautifully renovated main building.
Although this superb facility provides improved classroom facilities, CDS maintains many of the traditions that help us appreciate the beautiful natural resources our new campus offers. Students still enjoy eating lunch outside under the trees every day and classes have the opportunity to move outdoors for discussions, reading, and other activities.
Home of the Patriots - New Athletic Facilities
In April 2016 CDS dedicated the “The Hayes Family Gymnasium,” phase one of the school’s “Center for Student Life." The gymnasium is used by all grades 1 - 10 for PE classes as well as elementary intramurals and middle school and high school athletic teams. The more than 11,000 square feet of playing space in the massive gym can be divided by a motorized roll-up divider curtain and has room for two regulation size basketball courts or three full-size volleyball courts. Bleachers emblazoned with “CDS” provide seating for 498 fans. The facility also includes a spacious fitness center and offices for the athletic directors and secretary. The modular building that was previously used for the weight room has been moved adjacent to the new gym and provides office space for coaches and the PE faculty together with locker room facilities.
The start of the 2016-2017 school year heralded the opening of Carrollwood Day School's new athletic field complex. This complex, located next to the gym, provides a true home field advantage for the football, soccer, and baseball programs. The athletic field complex consists of three turf fields. Athletics are not the lone beneficiaries of CDS's facility upgrades; the fields are also used for PE classes and intramural sports. CDS is proud to have already hosted numerous district and regional tournaments in our new athletic facilities.
