Carrollwood Day School

Character Education and Community Service

CDS studentsCarrollwood Day School incorporates Character Education as part of its core curriculum from early childhood through grade 8. The entire school community - administration, faculty, staff, students and parents - make a year-round commitment to building moral character and creating a caring community.

At CDS we live our values everyday. For example, each morning our preschoolers sing a special "We Wish You Well" song to absent classmates. Kindergartners practice conflict resolution skills when they work out their differences kneeling on a "Peace Mat". Every student helps design and implement a grade-level community service project and the entire school has adopted a school in a remote village in Nicaragua. Coins to Cordobas - school-wide fund raising projects for our Nicaraguan friends - has made it possible for CDS to purchase desks for the students and a water tank to provide clean water for the classrooms. Teachers and staff have donated their time on a weekend to work on a Habitat for Humanity project. Parents have the opportunity to join with staff to participate in book studies and to hear special guest speakers.

Current research supports what CDS has known for a long time - character education programs promote learning and academic success. Our character education initiative builds on the values our students learn at home and enhances our strong academic program.
